When buying a flour mill in India, one of the first questions is: single phase or three phase? Getting this wrong means either buying a machine your shop cannot power, or spending more on electrical work than necessary. Here is everything you need to know.
What Is the Difference?
Single Phase (220–240V): The standard domestic electricity supply available in every home and most small shops. It uses 2 wires (live + neutral). Suitable for motors up to 2–3 HP. Most residential connections in India are single-phase.
Three Phase (415V): A more powerful commercial/industrial supply using 3 live wires. It delivers more power with less current draw, making it ideal for high-HP motors. Required for most commercial atta shops, factories, and larger machinery.
Which Phase for Which Machine Size?
| Machine Size | Motor HP | Phase Required | Connection Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10" | 1.5 HP | Single Phase | Home supply (15A plug) |
| 12" | 2 HP | Single Phase | Home supply (15A plug) |
| 14" | 3–5 HP | Three Phase | Commercial meter needed |
| 16" | 5–7.5 HP | Three Phase | Commercial meter needed |
| 18" | 10–15 HP | Three Phase | Industrial connection |
How to Get a Three Phase Connection in India
If your shop does not have three-phase power, you can apply for a commercial connection through your state's DISCOM (electricity board). The process typically involves:
- Submit application at your local DISCOM office with shop documents
- Pay a connection deposit (varies by state: ₹3,000–₹10,000)
- DISCOM installs a 3-phase meter (timeline: 2–6 weeks)
- Hire a licensed electrician to wire your shop (₹2,000–₹5,000)
Many commercial areas already have 3-phase infrastructure — check with your landlord or neighbouring shops first. You may simply need to apply for a meter.
Can I Run a 3-Phase Motor on Single Phase? (No!)
This is a common question. Running a 3-phase motor on single phase requires a phase converter (VFD/inverter), which costs ₹8,000–₹25,000 and reduces efficiency. It is not recommended for flour mills — the torque characteristics of stone grinding need stable 3-phase power. Always match your connection to your machine size.
What If I Only Have Single Phase But Want a Larger Machine?
If you genuinely cannot get 3-phase power (rural area, residential-only building), your options are: (1) stick to a 12-inch machine on single phase, which can serve a small shop; (2) apply for a commercial connection — most state DISCOMs process this within 30 days; or (3) use a Diesel generator for the machine alone (not ideal for daily operation due to fuel costs).
Our Advice
Before ordering any 14-inch or larger machine, confirm your 3-phase connection. If you are not sure, call us — we have helped hundreds of customers navigate electrical connections across India and can guide you for your specific state.
